1954-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Designated the primary doubled die reverse for the 1954 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, DDR-001 exhibits a light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases in strength from left to right. This progressive spread pattern is characteristic of rotational hub doubling where angular displacement grows more pronounced at greater distances from the pivot point. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-894 and DMR-007, the variety is documented across three die states. Stage A shows the reverse in early die state with the obverse at mid-die state. Stage B presents the reverse at mid-die state with numerous north-south die scratches on the obverse, indicating late die state advancement. Stage C records the reverse at mid-die state, though this remains unconfirmed. The progression of die scratches from absent in Stage A to numerous in Stage B illustrates how obverse dies deteriorated faster than the reverse die in this pairing. Struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition of the Jefferson series, the 1954-S is a San Francisco business strike from the pre-proof era at that facility.
