Description

An S/S North variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent is the 27th cataloged RPM for the date. Die markers UVC-1049 / DMR-033 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with die crack over V.D.B. at LDS, die crack on forehead, die crack in hair, and reverse at LDS; Stage D with very weak secondary mintmark at VLDS, die break in upper left wheat grains at VLDS, and light die crack in lower right wheat grains. The transition from die crack at Stage C to die break at Stage D in the wheat grain area documents the progression from structural stress to actual metal displacement. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the northward displacement indicates the initial S punch was placed slightly south of the intended final position.
