1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-026

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1047, DMR-032, this 1953 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the S/S positioned to the West. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The S/S West repunch direction indicates the first S punch landed east of the intended position before the die sinker corrected the placement. Struck in 95% copper at the San Francisco Mint during the early 1950s, the 1953-S Wheat Cent comes from the latter years of the Lincoln Wheat Cent series, which would end in 1958 when the Lincoln Memorial reverse replaced the wheat ears design. RPM-026 is one of thirty-two cataloged repunched mintmark varieties for the 1953-S date, a substantial count that reflects high production volumes and the continued hand-punching method for applying mint marks. The Wheat Cent's final decade saw many working dies prepared at branch mints, each receiving individually punched S or D mint marks that frequently produced collectible positional variations.
