1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-023
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent carries the 23rd cataloged repunched S mintmark for the 1953 date. Die markers UVC-504 / DMR-029 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C with obverse and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a die crack from lapel to rim at VLDS and reverse at VLDS. The lapel-to-rim die crack at VLDS documents extreme structural fatigue in the die's terminal life. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1953-S was among the lower-mintage San Francisco cent outputs of the early 1950s, and each working die received its S through manual punch application at the Philadelphia Mint before shipment to the San Francisco facility.
