1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-019

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-019 with die marker references UVC-500 and DMR-025, this 1953-S Lincoln Wheat cent displays a triply punched mintmark with S/S/S displacement, rotated counterclockwise and shifted to the south. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A shows both the obverse and reverse at early die state. Stage B advances to early-to-mid die state, with light die scratches appearing above the date on the obverse and the reverse at early-to-mid die state as well. By Stage C the die has reached late die state, with a light die crack developing on the forehead, a die crack forming in the left wheat lines on the reverse, and another crack in the right wheat grains. The counterclockwise rotation combined with the southward shift distinguishes this triple punching from the more common straight-line repunching seen on many Wheat cent RPM varieties. Late 1940s and 1950s San Francisco Wheat cents are popular with variety collectors due to their relatively lower mintages and the frequency of mintmark anomalies.
