1953 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1953 25¢ Pr WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, this Philadelphia Mint Proof Washington Quarter exhibits a Class I clockwise spread visible on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials, IGWT, and the lower queue. Class I doubling results from the hub rotating slightly between impressions, producing a rotational spread across multiple design elements. On the obverse, a short diagonal die gouge appears on the nose to the left of the eye, and two short die gouges sit to the left of the hair directly to the left of the ear. The reverse carries a short die gouge running south from the upper right of the C in AMERICA. As a proof striking, this coin was produced using specially prepared dies and polished planchets for collector sales at the Philadelphia Mint. Struck in 90% silver with John Flanagan's George Washington design, proof Washington Quarters from the early 1950s were issued in modest quantities. The clockwise spread across multiple obverse elements makes this a visually rewarding doubled die variety that benefits from the mirror-like proof surfaces for enhanced visibility.
