1953 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Light spread appears on the lower serifs of QUARTER DOLLAR, both stem tips, and RICA of AMERICA on this 1953 Washington Silver Quarter doubled die reverse, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0814 and DMR-004. The comments field notes this is a proof issue, making it a doubled die on a specially struck coin — proofs are struck multiple times with polished dies on polished planchets, and a doubled die on a proof adds the variety premium to the proof's inherent collectibility. Stage A shows die scratches on the eagle's right inner wing and several concentric die scratches on the queue (the hair ribbon), both in early die state. Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in middle die state, and Stage C shows both in late die state. As DDR-001, this is the first documented doubled die reverse for the 1953 date. The 1953 proof Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which was the exclusive proof facility at that time. San Francisco did not begin proof production until 1968. The doubling on the serif tips of QUARTER DOLLAR and stem ends indicates the hub shifted slightly between impressions during the die manufacturing process, with the spread most visible on fine terminal details of the design.
