1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
RPM-004 on the 1952-S Washington Quarter is an exceptional variety: the S mintmark was punched three times into the working die (S/S/S) with impressions displaced to the Northwest and Southeast — a triple repunching rather than the more common double repunching. Attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers are UVC-0808 and DMR-008. The mintmark style is MMS-002. The obverse die variant is ODV-006, featuring a Thin Motto. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). Triple repunchings require the die sinker to have repositioned and re-struck the mintmark punch at least twice before the final dominant impression was applied, creating three overlapping S impressions at divergent angles. The Northwest and Southeast displacements mean the secondary impressions appear in opposing directions relative to the primary strike, which is particularly distinctive under magnification. ODV-006 (Thin Motto) identifies this obverse die by the relative thickness of the IN GOD WE TRUST lettering, adding a second layer of attribution. The 1952-S Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver, 10% copper composition. Die markers UVC-0808 and DMR-008 complete the diagnostic set for this die pair.
