1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-017

Description

RPM-017 on the 1952 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent is a repunched mintmark variety attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers: UVC-450 and DMR-019. Stage A shows strong die scratches running North-South on the obverse in early die state. The S mintmark appears over a previous S in a shifted position, consistent with the manual mintmark punching process used at San Francisco before hub-punched mintmarks were adopted. The strong North-South obverse die scratches in Stage A are an unusual and distinctive marker that aids initial identification on this die. The 1952-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in 95% copper at San Francisco, and S-mint Wheat Cents of the early 1950s are routinely searched for RPM varieties. RPM-017 adds to the VarietyVista-attributed census for this date, with the UVC-450 and DMR-019 markers providing die-specific confirmation. The shared DMR-019 code with the 1950-S RPM-016 is a coincidence of the VarietyVista numbering system and does not imply a shared die between dates.
