1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1952-S San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched S mintmark with distinctive obverse die deterioration markers. Die markers UVC-444 / DMR-013 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with V-shaped die scratches on the upper back shoulder at MDS, strong die scratches on the back of the neck, a light die clash at the throat, and reverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The combination of V-shaped shoulder scratches, neck scratches, and throat die clash at Stage B creates a concentration of obverse surface damage that is diagnostically rich. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1952-S had a mintage of approximately 137.8 million pieces, with each working die receiving its S through manual punch application at the Philadelphia Mint.
