1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features distinctive facial die scratches and a reverse die gouge as early-state attribution markers. Die markers UVC-437 / DMR-006 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with die scratches north-south in front of face at EMDS and die gouge north-south between TE of UNITED at EMDS; Stage C with weak obverse die scratches at LMDS and reverse die gouge worn away at LMDS; Stage D with die crack on forehead at LDS, die crack in lower 5 of date, and reverse at LDS. The reverse die gouge wearing away between EMDS and LMDS while obverse scratches simultaneously weaken documents parallel surface erosion on both dies. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1952-S had a mintage of approximately 137.8 million pieces from the San Francisco facility.
