1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-385 / DMR-004, this 1952-S Jefferson nickel carries a repunched S mint mark, one of the scarcer RPM varieties in the early 1950s nickel series. When the S punch was applied to the working die a second time in a slightly offset position, traces of the first impression remained visible on every coin struck from that die. Three die stages have been recorded for this variety. Stage A represents early die state, characterized by numerous die scratches running north to south across the reverse while the obverse is also in early die state. By Stage B, most of the reverse die scratches have worn away at mid-die state, with the obverse similarly progressing to mid-die state. Stage C finds both the reverse and obverse in late die state, where accumulated striking wear has further softened the surface details. The progressive disappearance of the reverse die scratches across these stages provides collectors with a useful framework for placing their specimens in the production timeline, while the repunched S remains identifiable across all three stages.
