Description

Leading RPM variety on the 1952 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-001. Die marker codes UVC-383 and DMR-002 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS) and is confirmed by two concurrent markers: a die scratch above the N of MONTICELLO, and die scratches under LIBERTY. These Stage A obverse markers provide reliable early-state attribution. Stage B is middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed). Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The die scratch above N of MONTICELLO is especially useful for in-hand attribution because it sits in an area of low relief that retains die surface details well into middle die state. Die scratches under LIBERTY complement this marker in Stage A. The 1952-S Jefferson Nickel is a standard San Francisco postwar issue, and RPM-001 is the primary repunched mintmark variety for the date. Collectors should confirm both Stage A markers when examining early-state examples, as the die scratch diagnostics provide the strongest attribution evidence. Attribution: VarietyVista; UVC-383, DMR-002.
