1952-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1952-D 25¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced in the Cherrypickers guide as FS-25-1952D-101, this Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 9 o'clock, visible on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials JF (John Flanagan), IN GOD WE TRUST, and the lower queue (ponytail) of Washington's portrait. The CCW rotational spread from a 9 o'clock pivot means the secondary hub impression rotated slightly counterclockwise around a point on the left side of the die, producing maximum displacement on elements positioned furthest from that pivot — which explains why the date at the bottom and LIBERTY at the top show the strongest doubling while elements near the 9 o'clock position show minimal separation. Obverse die markers include a short die crack extending from the rim midway between the I and B of LIBERTY. Reverse markers document more extensive die deterioration: a deep die scratch connecting the upper points of the M in AMERICA, a die crack running through BUS in PLURIBUS and extending to the top of the eagle's left wing, and a die scratch running parallel to the rim above the second A in AMERICA. The Cherrypickers listing as FS-25-1952D-101 confirms this as a recognized variety actively sought by collectors examining Washington Quarter sets. The 1952-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan's obverse design depicts George Washington based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's celebrated bust, and the heraldic eagle reverse served from 1932 through 1998. The combination of a strong rotational DDO with the Cherrypickers designation makes this a priority variety for Washington Quarter variety collectors.
