Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as WRPM-007 for the 1952-D Roosevelt Dime, this repunched mintmark variety documents a misalignment during the manual mintmark application process that was standard practice at United States Mint facilities through 1989. Before automated hubbing incorporated mintmarks directly into the master die, each individual working die received its mintmark through a hand punch — a small steel rod bearing the raised letter "D" for Denver that was struck into the die face with a mallet. When the punch was applied more than once or shifted between impressions, the resulting die carried overlapping mintmark images that transferred to every coin struck from that die. The 1952-D Roosevelt Dime was produced during the silver composition era (90% silver, 10% copper) that ran from the denomination's 1946 introduction through 1964. John R.
