1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-020

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-431 and DMR-022, this 1952-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark is a later-numbered variety within the documented set for this date. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A: early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, the middle die state: a die crack runs north-northwest from the V of V.D.B. on the reverse, and a die chip develops off the back of the upper E of ONE. The crack from V.D.B. is a characteristic progressive failure location on Lincoln Wheat Cent reverses, where the sharp angular elements of the initials create stress concentrations in the die steel. The die chip on the E of ONE provides a secondary MDS confirmation point. Stage C: late die state, unconfirmed. The two Stage B markers — crack from V.D.B. and chip on E of ONE — are among the most precisely located diagnostics in the VarietyVista Lincoln Cent RPM catalog, allowing attribution from reverse examination alone. The 1952-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced in large quantities at Denver, making die variety hunting through original rolls a practical pursuit.
