1952 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

One of the more dramatic repunched mintmark varieties in the Lincoln wheat cent series, RPM-008 on the 1952-D cent displays a remarkable D/D/D/D quadrupled mintmark with serifs from four separate punch impressions visible beneath the date. Cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-418 and die marriage record DMR-009, this Denver Mint issue shows three documented die stages tracing an extended production life. Stage A in early die state carries unconfirmed markers. By Stage B at mid-die state, the obverse has reached mid-die state, a die break has appeared on the T of CENT on the reverse in late die state, and a medium die chip has developed in the right wheat grains. Stage C pushes the obverse into late die state, with a die crack extending from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim in very late die state, while a small die chip has formed on the T of CENT. Quadrupled mintmarks are uncommon among Lincoln wheat cents, and the four overlapping D impressions make this one of the more visually compelling RPM varieties from the early 1950s Denver production.
