1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Repunched mintmark variety on the 1952 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-006. Die marker codes UVC-416 and DMR-007 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed). Stage C is late die state (LDS) and is identified by three concurrent deterioration features: a die crack across the lower lapel of Lincoln's coat, a die crack from the lapel to the rim, and a die chip on the T of CENT on the reverse. This three-point Stage C diagnostic — lapel crack, lapel-to-rim crack, reverse letter chip — is unusually specific and allows confident late-state attribution. Denver Wheat Cents from the early 1950s were produced in large numbers and RPM varieties are regularly encountered in original rolls and bulk lots. Collectors finding a 1952-D cent with these Stage C marks should confirm the D/D repunching first — the defining feature — as the late die state markers alone are not exclusive to this variety.
