Description

Holding the lead catalog position for the 1952-D date, this VarietyVista-documented Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent provides an unusually detailed four-stage die life record. Die markers UVC-411 / DMR-002: Stage A shows a strong secondary mintmark at EDS with die gouges above UST of TRUST and reverse at EDS. Stage B retains the strong secondary mintmark at MDS with reverse at MDS. Stage C reveals a medium secondary mintmark at LMDS with obverse die gouges worn away and reverse at LMDS. Stage D is LDS (unconfirmed). The progressive attenuation from strong through medium documents how sustained striking pressure gradually erased the displaced D impression. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1952-D was struck during the Korean War era when Denver Mint cent production remained robust.
