1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Third repunched mintmark for the 1952-D Jefferson Nickel, RPM-003 adds another variety from Denver's early-1950s die population. Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-382 and DMR-004, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel during robust postwar production. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A (EDS), Stage B at MDS with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C (LDS). The notation specifying both sides at MDS reflects simultaneous die wear, contrasting with varieties where obverse and reverse deteriorate at different rates. Three RPMs for the 1952-D reflects systematic documentation of Jefferson Nickel die varieties during this era. Each Denver die required individual D placement by a die sinker, and the imprecision of hand-punching ensured a percentage of dies received misaligned impressions. Schlag's design was well established, and Denver's sustained production generated a steady stream of RPM varieties for catalogers.
