1951 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1951 25c WDDO-002), this 1951 Washington Quarter obverse doubled die presents a counter-clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 8:00, producing doubling on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue. The CCW pivot spread is Class I doubling, in which slight die rotation between hub impressions creates a radial separation that increases with distance from the pivot point. Obverse die markers are well documented: a die scratch runs northeast from the lower right of the 5 in the date; a short strong die gouge protrudes from the rim to the left of the T in LIBERTY; a die scratch runs northeast from the upper back of the queue. Reverse die markers include a strong die scratch connecting the upper Q and U of QUARTER, a short die scratch running east from the center T of UNITED, and a die scratch running southwest-to-northeast inside the lower R of AMERICA. No cross-references to other attribution systems are known. The 1951 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia.
