1951 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
A strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 8:00 on this 1951 Philadelphia Washington quarter shows on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue. Cross-references: CONECA 4-O-V; Crawford CDDO-001; Wexler Variety ID: 1951 25¢ WDDO-001. Obverse die markers: two parallel die scratches running southeast from the area between the B and E in LIBERTY; a die scratch running northeast from beneath the B in LIBERTY. Photos of this variety were taken by Billy G. Crawford for the Wexler Files. The 1951 Washington quarter was struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver, a composition the Washington quarter maintained until mid-1965. WDDO-001 on the 1951 quarter carries three independent cross-references — CONECA, Crawford, and Wexler — placing it among the most thoroughly documented doubled die obverse varieties for the date. The strong CCW spread direction and the 8:00 pivot point give this variety a consistent visual presentation across die states, and the multiple die-scratch markers on the obverse provide reliable field-confirmation points. A small die gouge can be found to the left of the upper R in LIBERTY. A die crack runs east across the upper forehead and into the hair. A die crack runs across the base of the bust. Reverse: A die crack runs down the eagle’s right wing. A die crack can be found on the upper eft wing below AMER in AMERICA.
