Description

Cross-referenced as FS-101 and cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1951 Proof Lincoln wheat cent carries DDO-001, the top-designated doubled die obverse for the date, displaying strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. The die's history is tracked across four stages spanning two UVC entries. Under UVC-1787/DMR-003 in Stage A, two die gouges appear on the forehead above the bridge of the nose, two light die gouges sit near the rim east of the date, and a light die gouge marks the stem of the T of CENT. Stage B under UVC-1788/DMR-004 shows the rim gouges weakened, the reverse die changed, and that reverse is itself listed as DDR-002, creating a dual-doubled-die pairing. Stage C under UVC-1787/DMR-003 shows the rim gouges worn away and the reverse changed back to the original pairing. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. As a Proof issue, this variety was struck with greater pressure and care than business strikes, and the FS-101 designation confirms its standing as the premier doubled die obverse for the 1951 Proof cent.
