1951 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Cross-referenced as FS-101 and cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1951 Proof Lincoln wheat cent carries DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001 (written 1951 Pr WDDO-001), a doubled die obverse with strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Both catalogs give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (21.35), which Wexler writes FS-01-1951-101 (021.35). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class II spread toward the center on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, with slight spread on the date, the upper hair and Lincoln's eyelid. Obverse stage A has two small gouges on the forehead just over the bridge of the nose, a gouge (dot) between the bottoms of the I and B in LIBERTY, and two small gouges near the rim east of the date; in stage B the rim gouges are weaker, and in stage C they are gone. Reverse stage A has a small gouge on the lower T of CENT. In stage B a new reverse die is used, a doubled die listed as 1951 Pr WDDR-001, and in stage C the stage A reverse die returns. Hugh Campbell submitted stage A, Peter Beane stage B and John A. Wexler stage C. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II, Breen as #2199, and Coppercoins as 1951P-1DO-001P. VarietyVista, crediting Hugh T. Campbell with the report, identifies it as a proof and lists its stage B reverse as DDR-002. Under UVC-1787 and DMR-003, stage A has two gouges on the forehead above the bridge of the nose, two light gouges near the rim east of the date and a light gouge on the stem of the T of CENT, early-middle die state. Stage B, under UVC-1788 and DMR-004, has weak rim gouges and a changed reverse die, the one listed as DDR-002, both middle. Stage C returns to UVC-1787 and DMR-003, with the rim gouges worn off and the reverse die changed back to the earlier pairing, late-middle; a late stage D is unconfirmed.
