Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks a forehead die crack that intensifies and changes direction across four stages. Die markers UVC-385 / DMR-032: Stage A with obverse at EDS and reverse at MDS; Stage B with die clash at throat and behind neck at MDS and reverse at LDS; Stage C with die crack on forehead at LDS, die chip on T of CENT at VLDS, and die crack on east side of the stem of the T of CENT; Stage D with heavier die crack on forehead with an upward turn at VLDS and reverse at VLDS. The forehead crack developing an upward turn at Stage D documents changing stress dynamics as the die neared failure. The die clash at throat and behind neck at Stage B indicates the dies contacted without a planchet. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1951-D's large die population generated over 30 cataloged RPMs.
