Description

Among the more emphatic repunched mintmarks cataloged for 1951-D Wheat Cents, RPM-025 carries VarietyVista codes UVC-384 and DMR-031 and documents a triple repunching — D/D/D Northeast, Serifs — making it one of the stronger multi-impression varieties in the late wheat cent series. Three separate applications of the mintmark punch landed in progressively displaced positions to the northeast, and the serif remnants of underlying impressions add a distinctive fringe to the northeast edges of the primary mintmark flag. The variety progresses through three documented die stages: Stage A is the early-middle die state, with both obverse and reverse in EMDS; Stage B (MDS) is marked by a die crack developing over the V.D.B. designer initials below Lincoln's shoulder on the obverse — a bold secondary diagnostic visible to the naked eye in later substates; Stage C (LDS) is documented on the reverse. The V.D.B. die crack in Stage B makes this variety attractive to collectors who want a die-state story in addition to the mintmark variety itself, as the crack's growth can sometimes be tracked across multiple die states if examples from different stages are assembled.
