Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1951-D Wheat Cent carries die markers UVC-379 / DMR-026 documenting an informative three-stage die life. Stage A begins with the obverse at EDS and a die chip off the back of the upper E of ONE at MDS. Stage B develops a die clash at the throat and a die break on the T of CENT at LDS. Stage C reaches LDS (unconfirmed). The die clash at Lincoln's throat reveals where the reverse design transferred onto the obverse during an unprotected contact event, and the subsequent break on the T of CENT shows progressive structural failure. Struck at the Denver Mint, composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 20th cataloged RPM for the 1951-D date reflects Denver's substantial working die population for early 1950s cent production.
