1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-019

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1951-D RPM-019 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a repunched D mintmark from the Denver Mint. Die markers UVC-378 / DMR-025 track three progressive stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with die scratches running southwest from the date onto Lincoln's lapel — a directional die marker that spans two different design elements (the numerical date and the portrait's clothing detail), creating a distinctive linear feature useful for rapid authentication — while the reverse is also at MDS; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The southwest-directed die scratches from date to lapel in Stage B indicate a maintenance tool or debris was dragged across the die surface in that specific direction during the die's mid-life servicing, leaving parallel or semi-parallel marks that became progressively less distinct as additional striking wore the die surface. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse and features the wheat ears reverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1951 in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1951-D had a mintage of approximately 625.4 million pieces, reflecting the enormous post-war production levels that characterized the early 1950s. Repunched mintmark varieties from this era document the manual D mintmark application process at the Philadelphia Mint, where each Denver-bound working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punch strokes — a process that would continue until 1990 when mintmarks were incorporated directly into master dies, permanently eliminating RPM varieties from subsequent coinage production.
