1950 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-018

Description

1950-S WRPM-018 is a repunched mint mark on the 1950-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S East: the secondary S lies east of the primary. Obverse Stage A has a strong series of gouges at the rim right of TRUST's last T, at about K-2:30, and another rim gouge at K-3:00 (Wexler notes these show in all known die stages); faded scratches heading north from LIBERTY's RTY, the stronger one coming from the T's upper right; a NW-SE scratch low on the bust, to the left of VDB's B; light concentric scratches on the beard and behind the lips; and a WSW-ESE scratch high on the cheek, southeast of the eyelid. On Stage B the K-2:30 and K-3:00 gouges are present but weaker, and a short gouge heads south from the shoulder's lower margin, just left of the V in VDB. On Stage C the rim gouges are weaker still and the shoulder gouge is stronger; new are two very strong SW-NE scratches through TRUST's R, fine concentric scratches at the rim over IN GOD WE T, a short crack running SSW-NNE in the upper hair below WE, and a short gouge heading SW from the W of WE at its lower left. On the reverse, Stage A has two parallel but widely spaced N-S scratches through the O of OF and left of AMERICA's first A, continuing south as far as the lower left wheat stem; very light scratches heading north from UNITED's N at its upper left; a long N-S scratch heading south from between the M and E of AMERICA; a long scratch heading north from AMERICA's last A at its upper right; several short scratches heading north from the lower right wheat stem; and a well-hidden dot on the lower left wheat stalk, southwest of UNITED's U, sitting between kernels three and four counting from the bottom (present in Stages A and B). Stage B adds a strong gouge (dot) above the top center of the T's crossbar in CENT (Wexler calls it the vertical crossbar) and a tiny gouge on the right wheat tassels, along their upper right margin, while the kernel dot remains. Wexler marks Stage C as a new reverse die, with many N-S scratches over most of the reverse, among them a strong one inside ONE's E and a distinctive pattern crossing UNITED's UNI and OF. David Bloomberg submitted Stages A and B, and John Bordner Stage C. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments say the listing once cataloged as 1950-S WRPM-048 proved to be a stage of this die and was folded into WRPM-018.
