Description

S/S West Die Markers: Obverse Obverse Stage A: A concentric die gouge shows at the rim above the N in IN and the G in GOD. A die gouge shows along the NW margin of the O in GOD. Numerous parallel die scratches run NNW above the TY in LIBERTY. A strong concentric die scratch shows near the rim below the designer’s initials and the back of the bust. Numerous NNW-SSE die scratches run below the chin and through the 1 and 9 in the date. A concentric die scratch shows near the rim below the front of the bust and below the mint mark. Numerous parallel die scratches run NW-SE below the TRUS in TRUST. Obverse Stage B: Numerous light N-S die scratches run through the date and mint mark area. A NNW-SSE die scratch connects the eyebrow with the bridge of the nose. A die scratch runs SE from the rim above the upper right side of the E in WE. A strong die gouge shows at the rim above the U & S in TRUST. A strong die scratch runs NW-SE from above the S in TRUST to the left side in the last T in TRUST. A long die scratch run SE in the field below the U in TRUST. A die scratch runs SSE from the lower left side of the mint mark. The Stage A concentric die scratch at the back of the bust by the rim is present but weak. Obverse Stage C: Die scratch under U in TRUST weak. Die scratch right side of the E in WE weak. Concentric die scratch at rim under bust present but very faint. Die scratches at date mostly worn away. Die scratch SSE from mint mark weak. Other obverse die scratches mostly worn away. Die gouge right of the mint mark. Reverse Stage A: A long die scratch runs SW-NE through the left side of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT. Two very light die scratches run mostly South from the right lower curve in the C in AMERICA. A light die scratch runs SW-NE through the right arm of the M in AMERICA. Some light N-S die scratches show in the field to the left of the upper C in CENT. Reverse Stage B: New reverse die. Numerous mostly N-S die scratches show throughout much of the central reverse. Reverse Stage C: New reverse die. Numerous curved, but mostly N-S die scratches show through the A & T in STATES and the C & A in AMERICA. A number of N-S die scratches show along the left inside opening of the C in CENT. Several light die scratches run NNW from the upper left side of the first A in AMERICA. Numerous, light die scratches run mostly South from the lower opening of the A in STATES.
