1950 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

1950-S WRPM-005 is a repunched mint mark on the 1950-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West: the secondary S lies west of the primary. Obverse Stage A: a concentric gouge at the rim over the N of IN and the G of GOD; a gouge on GOD's O, along its NW margin; many parallel scratches heading NNW above the TY of LIBERTY; a strong concentric scratch by the rim, under the designer's initials and the bust's back; many NNW-SSE scratches under the chin and across the date's 1 and 9; a concentric scratch by the rim under the bust's front and the mint mark; and many parallel NW-SE scratches below the TRUS of TRUST. Stage B adds many light N-S scratches across the area of the date and mint mark; a NNW-SSE scratch joining the eyebrow to the bridge of the nose; a scratch heading SE from the rim above the E of WE at its upper right; a strong gouge at the rim over the U and S of TRUST; a strong NW-SE scratch from above the S of TRUST to the left side of its last T; a long SE-running field scratch below the U of TRUST; and a scratch heading SSE from the mint mark's lower left. The Stage A concentric scratch by the rim at the back of the bust is still present but weak. On Stage C the scratches under the U of TRUST, right of the E in WE, at the date and SSE of the mint mark are weak or mostly worn away, the concentric rim scratch under the bust is very faint, the other obverse scratches are mostly gone, and a new gouge appears right of the mint mark. On the reverse, Stage A has a long SW-NE scratch through the left side of the T's crossbar in CENT; two very light scratches heading mostly south from the lower right curve of the C in AMERICA; a light SW-NE scratch crossing AMERICA's M at its right arm; and some light N-S field scratches left of the upper C in CENT. Wexler marks Stage B as a new reverse die, with many mostly N-S scratches over much of the central reverse. Stage C is another new reverse die: many curved but mostly N-S scratches through the A and T of STATES and the C and A of AMERICA; N-S scratches inside CENT's C, along its left opening; several light scratches heading NNW from the first A of AMERICA at its upper left; and many light scratches heading mostly south out of the A of STATES at its lower opening. John Bordner submitted Stages A and C, and Thomas Kalantzis Stage B. CONECA lists it as RPM #5 and Coppercoins as 1950S-1MM-005. Wexler notes that the coin first listed as WRPM-007 was found to be another die stage of WRPM-005 and was added here.
