Description
S/S South Die Markers: Obverse Obverse Stage A: Numerous die scratches run generally NW through and above the 1 & 9 in the date ending in the field in front of Lincoln’s chin. Several short die scratches connect Lincoln’s upper chin to the lower lip. Numerous die scratches run N from above the T & Y in LIBERTY. A long die scratch runs South from below the L in LIBERTY. A short die scratch shows below the V in VDB. Several short N-S die scratches show in the upper hair below and to the SW of WE. Several short N-S die scratches show below the front hair curl. A N-S die scratch connects the bridge of the nose with the eyebrow. Several short N-S die scratches show in front of the eye. A long die scratch shows in the field to the right of the front hair curl and runs South to right of the tip of the nose. Obverse Stage B: The Stage A die scratches near the 1 & 9 in the date are present but weak. A few of the N-S die scratches in the upper hair are present but weak. All other Stage A die markers are worn away. Reverse Stage A: Several die scratches run South from left of the upper C in CENT through the N & U in UNITED and ending below the O in OF. A strong but short die scratch runs South from below the F in OF. Many parallel die scratches run South from the right side of the E in ONE and through the T in CENT. A long die scratch runs South from between the B & U in PLURIBUS ending in the field just above the upper N in ONE. A NW-SE die scratch runs through the lower U and left arm of the M in UNUM. Reverse Stage B: A very light die scratch runs North from the upper left side of the E in AMERICA ending in the field left of the upper first S in STATES. A tiny die dot shows in the field right of the upper opening of the last S in STATES.
