Description

S/S West Die Markers: Obverse Obverse Stage A: Several NNE/SSW die scratches show to the left and right of the 1 in the date. A die scratch runs NW from the top of Lincoln’s hair between the E in WE and the first T in TRUST. A series of short, but heavy die gouges run North from the back of the neck, just below the back of the lower hair. A strong die dot shows along the back of the vest, SSE from the lower Y in LIBERTY. Numerous parallel NNE-SSE die scratches run above and below the BERTY of LIBERTY. A series of fine N-S die scratches show below the tip of Lincoln’s chin. A pair of parallel N-S die scratches show on the profile at the back of Lincoln’s mouth. Two faded concentric die scratches run close to the rim below and behind the back of the lower bust. A short die gouge shows at the rim NE from the 0 in the date. Obverse Stage B: A die crack runs over the designer’s initials. A curved die scratch runs from the back of the bust through the upper right side of the Y in LIBERTY. A curved die scratch runs from the lower left side of the E in LIBERTY to the lower back of the bust. An E-W die crack shows on the back of the forehead. Reverse Stage A: A strong die gouge (dot) shows above the last S in STATES. A short N-S die gouge shows in the field, right of the upper C in CENT. A fine die scratch runs South from the lower left side of the second U in PLURIBUS. A short N-S die scratch shows inside the left upper opening of the A in STATES. A series of light die scratches run North from the U in UNITED to the lower C in CENT. A die scratch runs NNW-SSE between the N and E in ONE. Reverse Stage B: A concentric die scratch shows at the rim above the IBUS in PLURIBUS. A faded N-S die scratch shows below the left side of the vertical crossbar of the T in CENT. The die gouge (dot) above the last S in STATES is not present.
