1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

An S/S West variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1950-S Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks four progressive stages with particularly informative die surface observations. Die markers UVC-1039 / DMR-016: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a light die crack on shoulder at MDS and the right upright of the N of CENT thin from abrasion at MDS; Stage C with die scratches above date at MDS and die scratches through C of CENT at MDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The abrasion-thinned N in CENT at Stage B documents selective letter erosion from die polishing or maintenance, a different degradation mechanism than the cracking and scratching seen elsewhere. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck during the Korean War era as Brenner's wheat ears reverse entered its final decade of production before the Memorial design replaced it in 1959.
