1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

A triple-punched S/S/S Southeast, Serifs variety, RPM-010 for the 1950 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent shows three distinct impressions of the S mint mark with displacement to the southeast and visible separation at the serifs. Triple-punched mint marks require three applications of the hand punch and are notably scarcer than standard two-punch S/S varieties, as the probability of a third misaligned punch diminishes with each additional attempt. The serif separation — where the upper and lower serifs of the S show multiple outlines — provides the clearest diagnostic feature under magnification. Struck in the bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, the 1950-S Lincoln Wheat Cent carries Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-351 and DMR-012, this variety is documented in two die states. Stage A represents early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. Ten documented RPMs for the 1950-S date reflect the multiple die pairs used at San Francisco during this period, each requiring individual hand-punching of the mint mark.
