1950 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004 / RPM-004

Description

The 1950-S RPM-004, which Wexler numbers WRPM-004, is a repunched mintmark on the 1950-S Lincoln wheat cent with the S punched three times. Wexler describes it as S/S/S North and Tilted, VarietyVista as S/S/S North, Lower Serif. Both give the Cherrypickers number FS-504, which Wexler writes FS-504 (21.34). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties, crediting John Bordner with both stages, lists heavy obverse stage A scratches that start below and to the left of the date's 1 and run north, ending at the tip of the nose or just right of it; two mostly north-south scratches between the 1 and 9; a north-south scratch through the upper opening of the 9; a faded northward scratch linking the upper chin and the upper lip; three light parallel scratches running north from the top of the Y in LIBERTY; a gouge in the field right of the upper G in GOD; and a heavy gouge at the rim up and to the left of the I in IN. Stage B on the obverse adds a heavy die dot north of the R in LIBERTY, in the field, and a die dot beside the I in IN on its right, roughly a third of the way up, while the scratches near the 1 are weaker. Reverse stage A has several faded north-south scratches inside the C of CENT, a north-south scratch in the field northwest of the upper C, three parallel scratches running north from the upper left of the O in ONE, two long scratches heading north from the E and S of STATES at their tops, a north-south scratch in the field left of the O in OF, and several north-south scratches through the AMER of AMERICA and the first S of STATES. Reverse stage B has one scratch heading north off the O in ONE at its upper left, a tiny die dot over the E in STATES, and the faint remains of the stage A scratch left of the O in OF. CONECA lists it as RPM #4 and Coppercoins as 1950S-1MM-004. VarietyVista, without naming a reporter, uses UVC-344 and DMR-005. Stage A has a strong secondary upper serif tip, heavy scratches running north in front of the date, and many north-south scratches on the reverse, all early-middle die state. Stage B has both sides middle. Stage C has a weak secondary upper serif tip, a light crack in the hair, and both sides late. Stage D has a very weak serif tip, weak obverse scratches, a longer and stronger crack in the hair, and both sides very late.
