1949 Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1949 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1949 Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY and TRUST show a very close spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A has SW/NE scratches running through the US of TRUST, horizontal scratches over the E in WE, and a die break on the front of the bust beneath the date's 1. Obverse Stage B is the same as Stage A. On Reverse Stage A the reverse is itself a doubled die, 1949 WDDR-001, with a close spread toward the center on UNITED and HALF DOLLAR. A crack heads SSW from the left bell support, passing WE's E at its lower right, and ends at the R in PLURIBUS; above the right end of the horizontal bar of DOLLAR's second L is a small gouge. Reverse Stage B is a new reverse die, with a small gouge left of the E in STATES. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
