Description

A D/D/D North triple-punched mintmark with serif-style punch, this VarietyVista-documented 1949-D Washington Silver Quarter from the Denver Mint features extensive late-stage die cracking. Die markers UVC-0693 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS with a die crack down eagle's right wing, a die crack from US of PLURIBUS to wing under AMER of AMERICA, a die crack across bust into queue, a die crack across upper hair, and a die crack across the forehead. The five distinct die cracks at Stage C — spanning both the eagle reverse and Washington's portrait — document catastrophic late-life deterioration. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, the 1949-D had approximately 10.1 million pieces, a relatively modest Denver quarter output.
