1949 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-040

Description

Forty repunched mint marks documented on the 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent place this date among the most thoroughly cataloged issues in the late 1940s Denver cent series, and WRPM-040 sits at that threshold. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1949-D 1¢ WRPM-040, documenting a working die where the D mint mark shows evidence of being punched more than once during die preparation. The depth of the 1949-D catalog — extending to at least forty-one entries — reflects a dedicated research community that has devoted decades to examining coins from this date, building on discoveries by earlier variety specialists. The year 1949 occupies an interesting position in Lincoln Cent numismatics: sandwiched between the high-mintage boom years of 1946-1948 and the Korean War era of 1950-1953, it represents a brief economic pause that slightly reduced output without diminishing variety density. Coins from this date saw heavy circulation over the following decade, and those surviving in collectible condition serve as research material for attributors and cherrypickers alike. No cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are currently published for WRPM-040.
