1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-039

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1949-D 1¢ WRPM-039 with no other known cross-references, this Denver Lincoln wheat cent exhibits a D over D over D mintmark repunched to the north and tilted in a rotated orientation. The obverse carries several confirming die markers: die chips sit beneath the bow tie, a die scratch runs north from the top left of the 1 in the date, and a die crack travels above the VDB designer's initials. The reverse shows extensive die cracking, including a crack along the left edge of the left wheat stalk, another running eastward from the left of the E through the PL of E PLURIBUS, a crack starting below the right wheat stem and continuing north along the right edge of the right wheat stalk before ending above the first U of UNUM, and a crack running westward from the center left edge of the first U of UNUM into the upper second U of PLURIBUS. This elaborate network of reverse die cracks indicates the die was heavily used before retirement, and the triple-punched D mintmark shifted northward with rotation makes this a noteworthy attribution among late-1940s Denver wheat cent varieties.
