1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-037
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1949-D 1¢ WRPM-037, this Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D/D North and Tilted (Rotated) triple-punched mintmark — an unusually complex variety where the Denver mintmark punch was applied three separate times, with the secondary and tertiary impressions showing both a northward shift and a rotational component relative to the final placement. The obverse carries an exceptionally rich array of die markers: die scratches in and around the eye and nose, die scratches running north-south in the field to the right of the nose, east-west die scratches to the right of WE, die scratches to the right of the 9 in the date, circular die scratches about LIBERTY, and die scratches below VDB. The reverse shows multiple die scratches running NW/SE and N/S creating a checkerboard pattern to the right of the E in E PLURIBUS, along with a large die chip on the upper left wheat stalk. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known. The triple-punch designation D/D/D is significantly less common than the standard D/D double-punch RPM, as three applications of the mintmark punch document either two unsuccessful attempts before the final placement or a particularly problematic die where positioning proved difficult. The 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper alloy weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait continued from 1909. The extensive die scratch inventory — more than ten distinct scratch and gouge features across both faces — makes this one of the most thoroughly marker-documented RPM varieties in the 1949-D population, providing collectors with numerous secondary verification points beyond the primary triple mintmark feature.
