1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-027

Description

Submitted by Paul Funaiole and cataloged by the Wexler Team as WRPM-027, this 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a D over D mintmark in a tilted or rotated configuration. Repunched mintmarks of this era resulted from manual punch application to working dies — a process that produced misalignments when a second strike landed at a different angle. Early die stage obverse markers include a die scratch in the eye pocket and a die chip on the bridge of the nose. On the reverse, an early-stage marker is a die chip to the right of and approximately centered on the E of ONE. A later die stage shows NE/SW and NW/SE die scratches at the bridge of the nose on the obverse, and NW/SE die scratches running through the D of UNITED toward the E of AMERICA on the reverse. These two sets of markers reflect early and later production stages of the same working die. The 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent had a Denver Mint mintage of approximately 214.0 million coins.
