1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1949 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark, where the initial D impression was rotated from the final corrected position. Obverse die markers include east-west die scratches above the date and additional east-west die scratches to the left of the head, neck, and shoulder. On the reverse, a strong die crack runs along the right side of the right wheatstalk. Further obverse diagnostics reveal two sets of north-south and east-west die scratches forming a checkerboard pattern between the L and I of LIBERTY, with an east-west die crack above VDB. Additional reverse markers include a die gouge to the left edge of the upper right wheat stalk. The tilted or rotated repunched mintmark orientation is less common than simple directional shifts, requiring the die sinker to have both displaced and rotated the initial D punch before correcting. Struck in 95% copper at Denver, the 1949-D Wheat Cent was produced during the late classic era of the series. The checkerboard die scratch pattern between L and I of LIBERTY is a particularly distinctive secondary diagnostic for this die marriage.
