1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-013

Description

Attributed by Ken Potter and John A. Wexler, this 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a D/D Southeast repunched mintmark. The first mintmark trace is visible under the primary D, displaced to the southeast, documenting the initial misplacement before the die sinker corrected the position. Cross-referenced as RPM #10 and Coppercoins 1949D-1MM-010, WRPM-013 also carries a secondary RPM #4 reference in its attribution history. Two die stages have been documented with different die markers for each, tracking this die pair through its operational life. Struck in the standard copper-zinc composition (95% copper, 5% zinc), the 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced at the Denver Mint during steady postwar coinage output. Repunched mintmarks on Denver issues of this era resulted from hand-punching branch mint identifiers to individual working dies, a procedure inherently susceptible to positional errors. The southeast displacement on WRPM-013 indicates the initial D punch landed below and to the right of its intended position, requiring the corrective second punch that established the final mintmark placement collectors see on circulated examples. Die chips show lower left and centered near the top of the U of TRUST.
