1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-322 and DMR-011, this 1949 Denver Lincoln wheat cent carries RPM-010, a repunched mintmark showing as D/D rotated counterclockwise. Unlike the more common directional RPMs that show simple lateral or vertical displacement, the rotational element here means the secondary D impression sits at a slight angle relative to the primary, creating an asymmetric overlap visible under magnification. Four die stages document an unusually long die life. Stage A in early die state and Stage B in mid-die state both remain unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. Stage D in very late die state reveals multiple die cracks on Lincoln's forehead, a die crack from the bust to the rim at the K-6:30 position, and a reverse in very late die state. The progression to four documented stages, culminating in extensive forehead cracking and a rim-reaching bust crack, indicates this die pair saw heavy use at the Denver Mint. The rotational RPM itself remains the primary attribution point, with the advanced die cracks serving as stage-specific diagnostics.
