1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-319 and DMR-008, this 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-007 exhibits a D/D repunched mintmark described in community comments as D/D Rotated CCW — indicating the Denver Mint engraver applied the correction punch at a counterclockwise rotational offset relative to the initial impression, creating an angular displacement between the two D images rather than a simple directional shift. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The CCW rotational direction is diagnostically distinctive because it produces a specific fan-like separation pattern around the D where different portions of the secondary letter diverge at varying angles from the primary — the counterclockwise rotation meaning the upper portion of the secondary D shifts left relative to the primary while the lower portion shifts right, creating a recognizable twist effect. The 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait, and the wheat ears reverse was in its 41st year of service. The seventh cataloged RPM for the 1949-D shares the CCW rotational characteristic with the 1948-D RPM-003, suggesting that rotational misalignment during punch application was a recurring phenomenon at the Denver Mint during the late 1940s production period. Examination under 10x magnification focused on the D's serifs most clearly reveals the CCW rotational component.
