1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

A D/D Southwest variety from the Denver Mint, this 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was documented by VarietyVista with an unusually extended four-stage die life. Die markers UVC-318 / DMR-007: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with a light die crack over V.D.B. (designer's initials) at EMDS and reverse at EMDS; Stage C at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The four-stage progression from EDS through LDS documents a die pair maintained beyond the typical three-stage lifecycle. The die crack over Brenner's initials appearing as early as Stage B provides an early attribution marker. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1949-D was struck during the late 1940s when Denver Mint production levels had stabilized after the wartime surge, generating a moderate die population for the date.
