1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-012

Description

Listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1949-D 5¢ WRPM-012, this Jefferson nickel presents a D/D Tilted (Rotated) mint mark repunching with the secondary D impression rotated relative to the primary. Obverse die markers include concentric die scratches near the rim above IN GOD WE TRUST and the star between LIBERTY and the date, short E/W die scratches through the I in IN, N/S die scratches in front of the throat and chin, crisscrossing die scratches in front of the mouth, and a short die gouge in the upper left corner of the opening in the O of GOD. Reverse die markers include a thin NE/SW die scratch inside the second U of UNUM and thin E/W die scratches between the ICE in MONTICELLO and CENTS. The 1949-D Jefferson nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy — the wartime 35% silver alloy having ended in 1945. The D mint mark was punched by hand into working dies during this era, creating the conditions for the rotational misalignment that defines WRPM-012. The combination of obverse and reverse die markers documented for this variety supports confident attribution even on examples with moderate circulation wear.
