1948 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-042

Description

San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cents from the late 1940s are prolific sources of repunched mintmarks because each working die received its S mintmark by hand, and WRPM-042 stands as the forty-second cataloged RPM for the 1948-S date alone — extraordinary catalog depth reflecting decades of sustained die study. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Wexler 1948-S 1-cent WRPM-042, this variety carries extensive die markers that help isolate the correct die pair. On the obverse, a die gouge appears in the hair under the D of GOD, another die gouge sits left of the 1 in the date abutting Lincoln's vest, and a third die gouge lies directly south of the second T in TRUST. The reverse shows a small die gouge touching the lower left side of the C in CENT with a die scratch running south-southeast from the lower C, along with a small die gouge between the lower T and A of STATES. These multiple markers across both sides provide reliable confirmation points for collectors seeking to authenticate the die pair, particularly since the heavy clustering of RPM varieties on this date demands careful differentiation between the forty-two-plus known examples.
