1948 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-035

Description

Thirty-five documented repunched mint marks on the 1948-S Lincoln Wheat Cent reflect both the scale of San Francisco's postwar cent production and the meticulous research invested in cataloging its die varieties. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 1¢ WRPM-035, identifying a working die where the S mint mark was struck at least twice with detectable positional variance. San Francisco's S punch was physically smaller than Denver's D, a dimensional difference that could affect how repunching manifested — closely spaced impressions on a small letter sometimes require higher magnification to resolve than equivalent displacement on a larger letter. The high sequence number indicates thorough documentation extending well beyond the most obvious RPMs into subtler varieties demanding careful examination to confirm as distinct entries. Postwar San Francisco cent production operated alongside the facility's other coinage responsibilities, and the S-mint mark was hand-punched onto every working die using the same manual process employed at Denver. No cross-references beyond the Wexler system are listed for this variety.
