1948-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-032

Description

Documented by Brian Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 1c WRPM-032, this repunched mint mark on the 1948 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an S/S South — the mint mark was punched a second time slightly to the south of the initial impression. Obverse die markers include north-south die scratches at the left side curve of the 9 in the date, a die scratch running north from the upper right of the mint mark to the 4 in the date, a die scratch south from the lower right side of the mint mark, die scratches to the southeast below TRUST, north-south die scratches through the RTY of LIBERTY, and a die scratch running south-southeast from the center of the R in LIBERTY. The late die state reverse shows heavy polishing and die chips. The bronze Lincoln Wheat Cent was in its fortieth year of production in 1948, and the San Francisco Mint continued the practice of hand-punching individual mint marks into working dies — a process that inherently allowed for positional variation when the punch was applied more than once. Thirty-two cataloged RPMs for this single date and mint reflects the extensive examination these wartime-era cents have received.
