1948-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-030

Description

Thirtieth Wexler-cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1948 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — an extraordinarily high RPM count documenting the frequency of mintmark misalignment on dies prepared for San Francisco during this period. The repunching shows S/S with the secondary mintmark displaced to the north, indicating the initial punch was placed lower than intended before being corrected with a second, higher strike. Submitted by Lloyd Hanson, this variety carries die markers on both sides: obverse die scratches appear just to the right of the eye on Lincoln's portrait, while reverse die scratches run south from the bottom of the horizontal arms of the T in CENT. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 1c WRPM-030, the high sequence number reflects the systematic hand-punching process of the era — each working die received its own individually applied mintmark, and each application was an opportunity for misalignment.
